Home Office Design

The home office is a place where you can focus on accomplishing your tasks for the day. Whether you need a quiet place to study, or focus on a big work project, the office should be an artful blend of design and function. Not sure on where to start? Follow these simple steps to have your perfect office space.

Consider Function

Its important to think about how your office space is going to primarily be used. As a library? You will need plenty of book cases and shelving to show off your book collection, as well a comfy furniture when you want to curl up with a good book. Working from home? Make sure you have a desk large enough to accommodate any office equipment, and plenty of drawers and cabinets to organize your files. A homework station? Be sure to get durable furniture and lots of storage containers to keep school supplies organized. You may also want to make sure you have a desk large enough for a computer and work space for school projects.

Define Your Style

As with any room, you need to decide what style you want your office to be. Take a note from the styles of your other rooms and decide if you want to continue the theme to your office. Draw inspiration from home decor magazines or websites like Pinterest or Houzz. If you like the rustic/farmhouse look, go with natural wood elements and a light color palette. For something more modern, keep the decor minimal and get furniture with clean lines. To keep things traditional, go with darker wood furniture (like cherry or oak) and style with richer tone accents.

Now that you have considered the style and function, you can start adding pieces to build your home office:

Furniture

A good desk is the main element of any office. Choose a sturdy, durable piece that works with your style and comfort level. Desks should be 48-60 inches wide and 28-30 inches high. Most desks are made of wood, but you can also opt for a white high-gloss desk, or a desk with a glass table top for a more contemporary look. If you are going to have guests or clients visit your office, you will also want to include a couple of accent chairs as well.

A white high-gloss desk will add a sleek, modern look to your home office.

Texture

Add an area rug to anchor the space that has a nice pop of color or a fun pattern for visual interest. If you have accent chairs, you may want to add a couple of throw pillows for comfort. Dress up your windows with curtains or panels for a bit of drama.

Accessories

This is your opportunity to have fun and let your design style shine! It's a great space to display your favorite artwork or artifacts. Add a small plant to bring the outdoors in. Bring in some art with an inspirational quote to keep you motivated. When staging, make your office memorable with some quirky or unique items to make your home stand out. Give your office a cohesive look with matching desk organization set to pull the look together. Get creative and have fun with it!
