Get Inspired: A Look Inside My Fall Decor

The fall season is officially upon us, and with the season brings a time of getting your home ready to welcome family and friends for the holidays. With Thanksgiving just a few short weeks away, don't let the hustle and bustle of planning leave you too stressed to plan for your home decor. If you're not sure where to start, I'm going to share with you how I decorated my home for the fall season, and some simple tips to get you inspired to get your home holiday ready!

Define Your Style

Before you start shopping for your decor, first define your design style. This is important because it will save you time and money because when it is time to shop, you will have a clear idea of what to look for instead of buying a bunch of random items that may not give you that cohesive look you are going for. If you are entertaining guests for the holiday, think about how you want them to feel in your home. More relaxed and casual? Maybe a rustic farmhouse look is good. Traditional and elegant? Go for a classic look with warmer colors. Chic and upscale? Go with softer colors with metallic accents. My overall design style is "co-phisticated" (cozy+sophisticated) with a touch of glam. So I wanted to find some items that reflected just that.

You can also find inspiration in decor magazines or online sources such as Pinterest, like the above photos.

Find Your Focal Point

Admittedly, it took me a while to get into the decorating spirit, but a trip to my local Marshall's did the trick. I found a beautiful table runner that had everything I was looking for. The warm orange and cream plaid pattern gave me my "co-phisticated" feel and set my color scheme, and the gold threading gave me the touch of glam that I needed. So everything else that I shopped for was centered around the table runner.

Mix-and-Match Old Items With New

Before doing your decor shopping at the store, shop around your house for items you can remix and use in a new way. Fill an old flower vase with colorful leaves or acorns and top with a pillar candle. Give your decorative pumpkins from last year a new look by painting them a different color, as I did with the pumpkin on my kitchen tray. For my mantle, I took my old leaves on the vine (from the dollar store) and added some new string lights (from Marshall's) to add a little more sparkle. I also found this beautiful white and gold pumpkin from Marshall's which went well with my white pumpkin motif. The cream pumpkins and branch bundles were also a new addition from my local Wal-mart, so you don't have to break the bank to find good decor as long as you know what you're looking for! Even something as simple as relocating items can give your home a new look. I moved the black candle pillars which I usually keep on top of my mantle, into the fireplace to add more visual interest and balance to my mantle.

Add Colorful Accents to Tie Everything Together

Since my fall style includes a "touch of glam" to my orange and cream color scheme, I was sure to include some gold and metallic accents to add that bit of sparkle and elegance to take my decor to the next level. For my tablescape, I went with my "go-to" gold mercury candle votives and gold chargers. I kept the centerpiece simple with a tray of pillar candles and gold acorns. For my tabletop tray, I added a couple of glitter pumpkins to my white pumpkins to break up some of the white and to keep the "glam" accent going. To anchor my fireplace, I took my large copper colored lantern and filled it with more candles and leaves. If you have trouble finding items with your accent color, remember that anything can be transformed with a simple coat of paint!

I hope you were inspired by my home decor to get started in your home. Keep in mind that your home is a reflection of you, so remember to have fun!
